Organizers of Jacksonville drag show receiving hateful messages from Proud Boys

Jacksonville Drag Show Organizers Receive Threats

Jacksonville drag show organizers receive threats from the Proud Boys, a right-wing extremist group known for violent protests. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the group has a violent agenda and has warned performers that they plan to show up in large numbers during the upcoming holiday drag brunch.

Threats and Intimidation

Both event organizers and management at Teppes have been receiving threatening emails and Facebook messages for several days. The bartender at Teppes even received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Proud Boys, who said they planned to bring 100 people to protest the event. They also made derogatory remarks about one of the performers.

Standing Strong Against Hate

Colby Chris, a drag performer who has been performing at Teppes once a month since July, remains committed to the show despite the threats. Chris expressed that while the threats could have been avoided by restricting the show to 18 and up, he refused to compromise on the show’s accessibility to families. “I’m not going to tell a parent how to raise their child,” Chris said.

Ensuring a Safe Environment

Chris emphasized that not all drag shows are the same, and the holiday drag brunch performance will be appropriate for everyone. He also pointed out that the only “danger” from drag queens is the possibility of glitter in your eye. Although he has no issues with peaceful protests, Chris mentioned that some messages included disturbing images from a Proud Boys protest at a drag event in Ohio, where participants appeared militarized, wearing uniforms and carrying rifles.

Law Enforcement Response

Management and performers have filed a report with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) regarding the threats. The owner of Teppes stated that JSO would provide security for the event if the venue agrees to cover the cost. In the interest of keeping everyone safe, the show will go on as planned, open to all.
